Ahhhh August… the month we think of as the end of summer: back to school, freshman move-in days, last vacations. But, in the estate planning world, August is so much more. August is National Make-A-Will Month!
It’s sad to say that only 32% of Americans say they actually have a Will. Don’t be fooled or believe everything on social media… everyone needs a will. If you have assets, children, pets and other “stuff” you should create a Will.
Making a Will doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Estate planning is about empowerment and peace of mind. With this document, you can protect loved ones by naming a guardian for minor children and designating someone to care for your pets. A Will allows you to specify who receives your possessions upon your death, whether they are friends, family members, nonprofit organizations, or other entities. A Will can help your loved ones avoid potential arguments over your assets, such as real estate or sentimental items like “Who gets grandma’s rocking chair?”.
So for the month of August, we will tip our hats to the mighty Will. Don’t pass on an opportunity to take control of an uncertain future by making financial and real estate plans now. If you don’t take action, the Courts will decide what is best for your family.
